Shaving 0.5 Seconds off of His 60 Yd Sprint Time and Showing Up as a Healthier and Confident Athlete | Evan Webb - Maryville College Baseball
THE START
Evan Webb came to Peak Performance as a hungry athlete with a chip on his shoulder. He knew he was a good athlete but recognized he needed something more to help take him to the next level. Evan was one of the early athletes at Peak Performance. He was waiting for a facility to open up in Blount County, and after he joined he hit the ground running.
THE WORK
Evan and Peak had about 3 months before his junior baseball season started. Through consistently hitting 2-3 sessions a week, Evan got his speed up leading into the season.
He continued to train through his baseball season and attacked summer workouts. Evan knew he had a few showcases over the summer and into the fall where the schools he was interested in attending for college would be.
THE PROOF
Focusing on acceleration and rate of force development, Evan was able to take 0.5 seconds off of his 60 yd sprint time and turned a few coaches' heads at the showcases he attended. Evan’s program was built around focusing on sprint technique from 10-20 yards - shin angles, body projection angles and was paired with lower body strength movements and power development. This allowed him to be in the right sprint positions and apply more force into the ground in those positions, making him faster.
His athleticism and confidence also increased on the field, while minimizing lingering and nagging injuries.
He said:
“I definitely felt more confident in how athletic I moved on the field. I cut off 5/10 of a second on my 60-yard time in like three months, which is crazy. I felt more explosive overall. I just feel more athletic. I feel like I move a lot better in the weight room, on the field, hitting - anything. I feel like I rotate better. I move better.
The bigger change was staying healthy…
“My injuries went way down; I don't have any small, lingering injuries. I didn't have any soreness that bothered me in games, and then I recovered like that.”
THE COACHING
Evan believes his success is from the commitment the Peak Coaching Staff had to him, pushing him through sessions and holding him accountable to attending training sessions, even when he might not have felt it.
No matter if there are 3, 4 or 8 kids in a session, Evan knows he’ll receive the same level of coaching from the Staff at Peak.
Evan explains:
“It really means a lot to me that no matter what time of week, no matter how large or small the class is, it's the same intensity and effort from the coaches as well as the athletes training in there. And it's an environment I wouldn't give up.”
HIS ADVICE
Now that Evan is off at school, his advice to current and future Peak members … “Hold the standard.” There is a level of intensity that is expected of athletes when they attend a training session, he knows that pushing harder is what will move people to their goals, and he recognizes that athletes need to continue to work hard to reach their goals.
THE FUTURE
Even though he is a short distance away, Evan knows that he always has a home at Peak and plans to be back during holidays and breaks, looking to continue progressing his game to the next level.
“Staying here for the hometown school has always been a dream of mine, and getting to go live it is enough to keep me excited already. But definitely, just the foundation I've built in here has helped a lot with just my overall confidence. I don't have to go far to come back into the gym if I want to. I'm really blessed to have the opportunity to go play at Maryville, and I'm ready to get in and compete and continue the standard here.” - Evan Webb
