The Values Behind Every Peak Coaching Session
Values should be a strong guiding principle for how and why an action occurs. At Peak Performance Training - Maryville, we have values we lead every coaching session with. They are the standard and where we coach from.
A handful of values essential to maintaining a high level of coaching:
- Discipline
- Know Your Why
- Effort
- Lead From the Front
- Love / Care
- Champions Do Extra
Greg Bogdanski III, CSCS, CPPS and Tyler Bost, CSCS talk more on Coaching Values in their Peak Performance Conversations. They break down values they coach by, why it is important to each of them, and how they live those values out as coaches. Tyler is a S&C Coach at Lincoln Memorial University (Harrogate, TN) and Greg is the owner and head coach at Peak Performance Training - Maryville.
DISCIPLINE
Being where one is supposed to be, doing what is expected, consistently. When someone comes in and trains, we recognize that this is a small percentage of their day. It is our responsibility to make sure it is someone’s best hour and they receive the same level of attention regardless of the time of day and number of classes it is for the coach that day. We put our full level of attention to our members, every session.
KNOW YOUR WHY
All of our coaches have a deeper meaning behind why they are coaching in our building. For some it is trying to right a wrong they experienced, for others it is to give someone a better opportunity than they had. But in each, there is a deep level of commitment to giving every member their best.
EFFORT
Bringing one’s best effort every day regardless of circumstances is required and expected for the role of a coach. On the floor, we push outside thoughts and circumstances to the side while we are coaching. We don’t let personal issues, thoughts or situations blind us from the task at hand - delivering a session with energy, and having our members work through a program effectively and safely.
LEAD FROM THE FRONT
Coaches are expected to model the exact habits - such as nutrition, recovery, and training - that they expect from their athletes and adult clients. If we are going to make a suggestion to have a member change a habit, it should be one that we are already practicing. Hypocrisy has no place in our building.
LOVE / CARE
Uplifting members and holding them accountable to high standards. The truth of health and fitness is that there are times of struggle, strain and where we have to push. But members can be coached with love and care through those times and to a better position. Coaches walk alongside members, encouraging, supporting and helping them get to their goals.
CHAMPIONS DO EXTRA
A great culture is one where coaches go above and beyond. We believe there are certain responsibilities that are required, Champions Doing Extra goes above and beyond that. It is in our willingness to converse and help our members - with nutrition, habits, or life events outside of the gym. It is making an effort to go to the games of athletes we train. It is making sure as a gym we are staying educated on the new training literature and making sure our programs are rooted in science, not fads.
